Surge Analysis for Headrace Channel in Populated Area
Client: Albany Engineering, Albany, New York
Albany Engineering Company plans to restore Cohoes Falls to its historic flow, providing recreational and environmental benefits. A new underground powerhouse will provide low-cost power for economic development.
WRE was retained by Albany Engineering to analyze surges in the existing power plant’s headrace channel. WRE engineers developed a computer model to analyze waves that might be generated in the channel in the event of a sudden power plant shutdown. The analysis of surge waves was particularly important because the headrace channel is adjacent to a populated area.
